Steps of refinishing a furniture 

Clean the item

The most important step before refinishing or renewing furniture is to provide deep cleaning. Cleaning is a must if the item is stored in a storeroom or kept outside for a long period of time. The majority of the people believe that using a heavy-duty cleaner will work more quickly on a dirty piece. Simplest and the easiest way to clean and protect dirty items is using a mixture of soap and warm water.  Scrub the surface with a soaped-up sponge, you may also use a paintbrush if your piece has meldings and carvings in it. Once scrubbing is over, rinse it with fresh water using a different sponge. After all, this is done properly pat the item dry with a towel.

Strip off Old Finish

After a period of time wood begins to turn dull, dark. This kind of piece requires a lot of protection while you are refinishing them. Chemical strippers can be used to remove loose varnish. Using a belt sander can help to remove the finish from larger areas. Sanding too much to a piece can cause damage. Sand must be done very carefully by using a hand around the curved and decorated areas. 

Apply a Coating

If you have used any chemical stripping then it is compulsory to sand the furniture surface with grit paper. After the piece is fully dry, it’s time for coating. A sealant product helps in protecting the wood and make a base for the stain. After applying a coat of sealant and allow it to soak into the piece. The excess coating should be wiped immediately. After the sealant dries, sand the furniture surfaces with fine sandpaper. 

Stain or Paint

The next step after successfully applying the sealant is to paint the furniture. Choosing stain or paint is a personal decision and may vary from person to person.
